md5sums files are stored on the hard disk, a conscientious intruder has taken care to modify these files to make them reflect the new checksums. You can get around this problem by using a .deb package directly but must first download:

apt-get --reinstall -d install ´debsums -l´

If we wan to make the check from a debian mirror :

apt-get –reinstall -d install ´grep-status -e ‘Status : install ok installed’ -n -s Package´

debsums is not the only modification detector. Other programs like AIDE or Samhain reliably detects any unusual change from an image of the previously saved system and validated
